345 AN IMPORTANT CHINESE TURQUOISE-GROUND EWER in the Tibetan style (Pemba Hu) with a globular body raised on a circular splayed foot surmounted by an elaborately formed knopped neck set with a broad cylindrical mouth decorated in polychrome enamels and gilt with Eight Buddhist Emblems interspersed with lotus scrolls and enclosed by formalised borders, the scrolling spout with conforming decoration and a moulded dragon's head with fanged teeth at the junction of the body, the beaded borders and details highlighted in gilt, the turquoise-glazed base with a Qianlong seal mark in iron red and of the period, 7.75" high. See illustration Provenance: Private Collection, Dorset and probably acquired in the 1980's at a country house auction by the vendor's mother. The present ewer belongs to a group of ritual wares that was specially commissioned by the Qing Court for placement on Buddhist altars for ceremonial use in palaces and temples, either within the Forbidden Palace, or Bishushanzhuang in Chengde. The inspiration for the form comes from Tibetan metal examples that were made as containers for storage of Sacred Water and used during Buddhist ceremonies. A number of ewers of this form are known, but perhaps the nearest is the green-ground example from The Gulland Collection in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, illustrated by Rose Kerr in "Chinese Ceramics - Porcelain of the Qing Dynasty 1644-1911", figure 101. A gold-ground ewer from the Hong Kong Museum of Art is illustrated in "The Wonders of the Potters Palette", Qing Ceramics from the Collection of the Hong Kong Museum of Art, published Hong Kong, 1984, page 113 no. 68.
