It is thought this dinner plate formed part of the dinner service made especially for the Terranova ship which carried the British Antarctic Expedition led by Robert Falcon Scott to the Antarctic in 1910. It is probable that this piece of tableware was used in the wardroom of the Terranova.

No other candlesticks of this date appear to be recorded on this scale. Stylistically they appear to be English, but elements of the construction suggest Continental manufacture. A Scandinavian origin has been proposed, but this is not accepted by a leading specialist in Scandinavian metalwork. It seems quite possible that these enigmatic candlesticks were manufactured in England by an émigré craftsman during the last quarter of the 17th century.
