Private Collection Gloucestershire and thence by descent Literature: Lisa Hilton: "Miss Peachum's Pleasure. The Life of Lavinia Fenton, Duchess of Bolton". (2006) This charming full-length portrait is evidently of Lavinia Fenton (1707-1760), the celebrated actress and noted beauty, who was the first person to perform the role of Polly Peachum in John Gay's "Beggar's Opera" in 1727 on the London stage. She was a sensation in the part and became the mistress of Charles Paulet, the third Duke of Bolton, who was infatuated by her having seen her on the stage. William Hogarth's "Beggar's Opera" paintings of 1728-1729, of which the most important is in the Tate Britain Collection, show her with the other actors on stage, with the Duke of Bolton and other leading society figures watching from the side. She married the Duke when his wife died in 1751. The present portrait is a likeness made before her marriage and it represents a significant portrait of an important theatrical celebrity of the period. We are grateful to Michael Liversidge, Emeritus Dean of Arts at the University of Bristol for his assistance in cataloguing this lot. £20000-30000 | Nil |
