| 418 | A RARE 1973 BROWN HEAD RUPERT DAILY EXPRESS ANNUAL, in pristine condition, unclipped and without dedication together with a 1973 white head Annual showing Bestall's signature erased and two loose 1973 brown head Annual printers proof covers. (4). Alfred Bestall was asked to provide the cover illustration for the 1973 annual and as per his earlier designs, gave Rupert his usual brown face whilst the illustrations within the annual show Rupert with a white face. After printing a small run of the annual, the Express decided to alter Bestall's original colourings of Rupert, changing him from brown to white at the request of many young readers who could not understand why Rupert was brown on the cover but white inside. Bestall was incensed at this decision and never illustrated another cover for the Express. The remaining run of the 1973 annual with a white faced Rupert on the cover continued to use Bestall's signature but the publishers altered the colour of the signature to disguise it in an attempt to appease Bestall. The limited number of brown faced 1973 annuals printed makes this annual particularly rare and only 12 others are believed to exist. £5000-7000 | Nil |

The 1970, 1971 and 1972 annuals both follow Bestall's traditional designs with a brown head Rupert to the cover. In 1973, two annuals were produced, one with a brown head Rupert and one with a whitehead. All future annuals were illustrated by Alex Cubie and John Harrold who between them gave Rupert a refreshing modern twist. £5000-8000 | Nil |

| 426 | THE RUPERT REFERENCE ARCHIVE: Compiled by Tourtel, Bestall and Chaplain, the archive contains an index of original newspaper cuttings of Rupert stories featured in the Daily Express from 1951 until the 1970's listing the date of the story's first and last appearance in the paper, the author and artist. There are also a number of newspaper clippings of stories which appeared in the Express but which did not appear in any annuals whilst the archive was active, records of discontinued projects and various press cuttings collected that feature Rupert. Over half of all Rupert stories published were by Bestall and he kept meticulous records which he handed down to Chaplain to aid his continuation of the character. These include documents detailing Rupert's identity as well as records of story titles and annuals used. An interesting letter from Bestall also features in the archive and is his reply to 'Rose' who suggests that Bestall has used the same title twice! There are also a number of typed and hand annotated story manuscripts by Chaplain together with his original story notebooks detailing ideas for future Rupert adventures. The Chaplain family recall Rupert fans sending in ideas for stories and souvenirs and the archive contains a large collection of these souvenirs ranging from aprons and slippers with the Rupert logo on to puzzles and board games. Chaplain also took inspiration from the publications he worked on previously and there are a number of other annuals in the archive such as the Express Boys and Girls Book, Rainbow, Teddy Tale and Tiger Tim.
