245. ENGLISH SCHOOL THE FORDE ABBEY HATCHMENTS: A set of five armorial hatchments tracing the heraldic history of Forde Abbey from 1659 - 1752, oil on canvas, 43" x 43", and another 37" x 37", three rolled and unstretched (unframed). See illustration
The first of the five armorials on these hatchments is that of Sir Edmund Prideaux, MP for Lyme Regis and Attorney General, who purchased Forde Abbey in 1649. He died in 1659. Also recorded is the Right Honourable Sir Francis Gwyn, Privy Councillor and Secretary of State to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. He was later Secretary at War to Queen Anne. In 1690 he married his cousin, Margaret Prideaux, sole heiress of Edmund.
Until recently these hatchments were thought to have been lost. They constitute a family series for the Prideaux and Gwyn families from the late 17th to the early 18th century, which is most unusual.

These urns correspond closely to no. 7 in the 1807 catalogue of the "Taillerie de Porphyre" at Alvdalen, Sweden, which was illustrated in the "Prix-Courant des differentes pieces de la Manufacture de Porphyre d'Elfdal en Suede, qui se vendant a Stockholm Sous l'addresse de la Direction de la Manufacture des Porphyres d'Elfdal". Such vases were often mounted, as the "ciseleur de la Cour Frederik Ludvig rund" revealed in a letter of 22 May 1799. The Alvdalen porphyry seam was discovered in 1731 and flourished in 1788 with new techniques introduced by Eric Hagstrom under the direction of Nils adam Bielke. Estimate: 3000-6000
