The reverse bears a label, apparently in a 19th century hand, identifying the owner as Captain SS Windham II in "Early Italian Pictures in the Collection of Her Majesty the Queen", Cambridge University Press 1983 Professor John Shearman describes the present work as an excellent version of the work in the Palazzo Pitti, Florence, begun for Grand Duke Cosimo II before April 1620 and delivered unfinished in September 1620. It was given by Ferdinando II to Cardinal Carlo de Medici in December 1626 and returned to the Pitti in 1667. Professor Shearman refers to the present work as a version, but not a copy of the Medici version. It has been suggested that this painting was the one executed for Alessandro Orsini. | Nil |
