In the past it has been referred to as the portrait of a "favourite hunter", but the lighter build of the animal may indicate that it is a racehorse, perhaps of eastern origins. The 10th Earl of Westmorland was Lord Privy Seal (1798-1806). More famously in 1782 he eloped with Sarah Child, the daughter of the banker Robert Child, of Osterley Park and married her at Gretna Green.
