| 261 | GEORGE STUBBS A grey horse, apparently belonging to Lord Westmorland, seen against a dark background, signed and dated "Geo: Stubbs pinxit/1786", oil on cradled panel, 20.5" x 29". See illustration Provenance: Reputedly painted for John Thane, 10th Earl of Westmorland. Private Collection. The name of the Earl of Westmorland (presumably the 10th Earl) has been attached to this painting since the 1930's. In the past it has been referred to as the portrait of a "favourite hunter", but the lighter build of the animal may indicate that it is a racehorse, perhaps of eastern origins. The 10th Earl of Westmorland was Lord Privy Seal (1798-1806). More famously in 1782 he eloped with Sarah Child, the daughter of the banker Robert Child, of Osterley Park and married her at Gretna Green.
