| 369 | GEORGE FREDERICK WATTS RA The wife (Euterpe) and three children of Alexander Constantine Ionides in an interior, including the infant Luke Ionides wearing Greek national costume, oil on canvas, 24" x 20". See illustration Provenance: The sitters and thence by descent. Literature: Cf. Mary Seaton Watts, Manuscript Catalogue of the artist's work, vol.1, page 74 (illustrated). The present work appears to be a preparatory sketch. It is an important early portrayal of the Ionides family and as such represents a significant document of his relationship with them. As well as being a successful businessman, Alexander Constantine Ionides (1810-1890) served as Consul-General for Greece in London from 1854 - 1866. In addition to Watts, who became the family's favourite portraitist, the artists he patronised and socialised with included Fantin-Latour, Poynter and Whistler. This painting represents an intimate portrayal of his wife Euterpe with their three youngest children. We are grateful to the Watts Gallery, Compton, Surrey, and, in particular, to the assistant curator, Julia Dudkiewicz, for confirming the attribution to Watts and assisting with this catalogue entry. £ | Nil |

| 370 | GEORGE FREDERICK WATTS RA A bust length portrait of a young girl, Miss Chariclea Ionides (born 1844 - died 1923), oval, oil on panel, 10.75" x 9.25", apparently retaining the original giltwood and gesso frame and oval gilt mount. See illustration Provenance: The sitter and thence by descent Literature: Cf. Mary Seaton Watts, Manuscript Catalogue of the artist's work, vol.1, page 75 (illustrated). This charming and intimate portrait probably dates from around 1846. The Ionides family were Watts' most important patrons and this remarkably intimate portrait vividly brings out the warmth Watts felt towards the family. We are grateful to the Watts Gallery, Compton, Surrey and, in particular, to the assistant curator, Julia Dudkiewicz, for confirming the attribution to Watts and assisting with this catalogue entry. £ | Nil |
