The present work appears to be a preparatory sketch. It is an important early portrayal of the Ionides family and as such represents a significant document of his relationship with them. As well as being a successful businessman, Alexander Constantine Ionides (1810-1890) served as Consul-General for Greece in London from 1854 - 1866. In addition to Watts,who became the family's favourite portraitist, the artists he patronised and socialised with included Fantin-Latour, Poynter and Whistler. This painting represents an intimate portrayal of his wife Euterpe with their three youngest children.
