SAMUEL HIERONYMUS GRIMM "Barlborough Hall, Derbyshire", watercolour, 11" x 18.75", with Spink and Appleby Brothers label to the reverse, and inscribed "This drawing was executed in 1785 while Grimm was working in Derbyshire. Grimm was commissioned by Cornelius Heathcote Rodes at Barlborough Hall, an Elizabethan house built in 1583. From Barlborough, Grimm executed around 350 monochrome drawings of views in the vicinity of Chesterfield, a collection which later came into the hands of Thomas Blore for the illustration of his history of Derbyshire.
