| 1061 | THOMAS HENRY KENDALL: A SET OF FOUR CARVED PANELS depicting the seasons, each carved in relief with birds amongst branches in circular surrounds, contained within walnut cushion-moulded and glazed frames, 21" x 22" overall. See illustration. Thomas Henry Kendall (1837-1919) was a master carver of the Warwick school of woodcarvers. He received two medals at the International Exhibition of 1862, one "For exceedingly artistic woodcarving", the second "For good design and workmanship in articles of furniture and specimens of woodcarving". Much of Kendall's work can be seen in churches of the period, in particular a lecturn in the church at Bodelwydda Fen, Flintshire which took some 6000 hours to complete. Kendall was also asked in 1872 to design and carved 32 panels for the dining room at the House of Commons. These panels, as with much of Kendall's work, are in a closely observed naturalistic style which echos the work of his most important influence Grinling Gibbons. £2000-4000 | Nil |
