1272 A JAMES I OAK CANOPIED CUPBOARD with an angled canopy with a moulded and arcaded frieze above a two panel back, all above an open shelf and a single panelled cupboard door and a further open shelf, with turned columns to either side, basically early 17th century, 33" wide. See illustration Literature: P. Macquoid & R. Edwards: "The Dictionary of English Furniture", London 1954 vol II, page 198, fig. 1 where the ownership is attributed to S.W. Woolsey. Canopied cupboards are rare in English furniture, and this example together with a plate cupboard at the castle dairy in Kendall, West Moorland are two of only a handful of examples known.
