162 COLONIAL INTEREST: A PAIR OF GEORGE IV PRESENTATION ENTREE DISHES AND COVERS of shaped rectangular form, with gadrooned and foliate shell borders, the pull-off covers part fluted and with detachable handles, modelled as a stag resting in a woodland glade, inscribed "The Colony of St. Christopher grateful to a paternal governor offers this tribute of respect to His Excellency Charles William Maxwell, Esq. April 28th 1820", the entree dishes, by Joseph Craddock and William Kay Reed, London 1821,(c.120oz), each 11.5" long. See illustration Provenance: Sold by a descendant of William Maxwell, Esq. Lieutenant-General Sir Charles Maxwell, Companion of the Bath, Commander of the Hanoverian Order, b. 29 May 1775, d. 23 September 1848, had a long and colourful military career. Having first seen action in the West Indies as an ensign in the Carib Wars, he fought the French in Holland, France, Spain, Germany and West Africa, where he became commandant of the Senegalese island of Goree, France's main trans-shipment point for the slave trade. While there he quelled a mutiny by white troops and hanged the ring leaders. Appointed Governor of Sierra Leone and Captain General of the whole west coast of Africa in 1811, he devoted much of his time to resettling slaves captured from the French by the Royal Navy. In 1815 he joined the Duke of Wellington's army in Brussels but just missed the battle of Waterloo, having been appointed Governor of Dominica in the West Indies. Four years later, in 1819, he became Governor of St. Kitts (St. Christopher) with additional responsibility for Nevis and Tortola. There he remained until the 1830's, when he retired. Although twice married, he had no legitimate offspring. It was uncharacteristic of a man of his period that his last will and testament acknowledged by name and left to, two "natural sons" whom he had fathered in St. Kitts, presumably on a female member of the island's population. His tombstone can still be seen in Kensal Green Cemetary. £1800-2600
