The subject is likely to be Ernest Terah Hooley, an infamous financier responsible for the purchase of Trafford Park. He was involved with many companies including Schweppes, Bovril and Dunlop Tyre Co but was twice jailed for fraud, forever branded as a swindler and rogue.

Commissioned as an Ensign in the 40th Regiment (now the First Battalion South Lancashire Regiment), he was promoted to Lieutenant in 1793, Captain in 1794, Major in 1801 and Lieutenant Colonel in 1810. He took part in the campaign in Holland and witnessed the surrender of the Dutch fleet in 1799 to Sir Andrew Mitchell. In 1811 he married the Admiral's niece, Elizabeth Catherine C. Sir Charles Mitchell was the son of Charles Mitchell of Bald Bridge, Fifeshire, Scotland. He was a Captain in the East India Company and between 1786 and 1800 he commanded the "William Pitt", an East India Man of 798 tons, on six voyages to the east. Charles is mentioned three times in the memoirs of William Hickey, writing about Calcutta in the 1790's.
He was knighted in March 1796 for "an action in the Straits of Molucca with a French Frigate".£800-1500

According to Malcolm Easton and Michael Holroyd in "The Art of Augustus John" portraits of coloured models constitute John's most successful genre. It may be compared to a painting presented to Mrs Valentine Fleming by the artist in 1921, similarly signed in the upper right hand corner. This work entitled "The Spanish Gitana" is thought to date from before 1921 (see "The Art of Augustus John" by Malcolm Easton and Michael Holroyd, page 174., no. 165). It may also be compared to the "Head of a Jamaican Girl" (probably 1937) exhibited at Temple Newsham in 1946 (no. 56) from the collection of Edward Le Bas.

Mario (Muzio) Clementi was born in Rome in 1752. During his teenage years, he undertook an apprenticeship in Dorset under the guidance of Sir Peter Beckford (cousin of William Beckford) at Steepleton House. Here, he studied music and nurtured his talent for playing the pianoforte. He later became a notable composer and pianist and went on to establish his own firm Clementi & Co., later Collard & Collard and Chapell & Co. He died in Evesham, Worcestershire, in 1832.£300-500
