The inscription refers to the figure on the back of the lion as the immortal Prince of Shih Fa, a benevolent deity without peer; the deity and the carving together are described with lavish praise and the answer to every question and every need is promised through the invocation of the deity's endless wisdom through this fine small image which, although it is much smaller than the figures of guardians and bodhisattvas, usually seen in temples, is said to have power which is just as great. The final line may be translated: "Qianlong xin si" (a cyclical date corresponding to 1761) yu tsan, "with Imperial praise", followed by an Imperial Seal in red.

A smaller, but comparable candlestick, is in the collection of the National Palace Museum Taipei illustrated in "Masterworks of Chinese Porcelain in the National Palace Museum Supplement" published April 1973. The overall form of this candlestick, which retains its' metal "pricket" is directly comparable to the present examples.
In addition, Soame Jenyns illustrates a mark and period candlestick from the collection of S.C. Coles as plate XCIV 2 in the standard reference "Later Chinese Porcelain", published 1951
Whilst the majority of Imperial pieces were marked, some ritual objects were not and it seems likely that the present candlesticks may belong to this rarefied group.

The first view of the group of factories depicted on Hog Lane, with the Swedish, English and Dutch flags aloft. The companion work shows the waterfront continuing to the East with the Creek factory and a small Customs post, together with a Customs boat, at the entrance to the creek itself. The Chinese merchants' riverside Hongs, built on piles, are visible to the right.
These extraordinary early views of the waterfront in Canton are painted in exquisite detail. In the first a frock-coated figure may be seen beneath the portico and through the open window in the upper floor of the New English factory one can glimpse an elegant chandelier hanging from the ceiling. Through this window is the factory's spacious dining room, situated above the entrance, a place well-known for its' opulent and convivial entertainment. Chandeliers ("lustres") were among the official presents given to the Qianlong Emperor by the British Embassy to reach China in 1793. Those in the English factory were often remarked upon by visitors, until their looting and destruction in 1841 and 1842.
The dating of these exceptional works is problematic, but they cannot post-date 1781. By then, the frontages of several Hongs had been at least partially rebuilt in a broadly European style.

The "Great Fire" of 1822 appears to be the first fire commemorated in Chinese "export" paintings. The disastrous blaze on the 1st and 2nd November 1822 is believed to have left 50,000 people homeless. The British factory sent out its' fire engines to lend assistance, but no water could be obtained. At about midnight the wind shifted from North East to North and it became apparent that the factories were in danger. A message was sent to Whampoa ordering up sailors from the Western ships. The first to arrive at 7am on 2nd November were the Americans, whose anchorage lay nearest to Canton. The British arrived half an hour later. The fire raged all that day and continued into the following night. The ruins were still smouldering the following morning when armed militia were sent to protect what valuables remained from looters. Indeed, $700,000 was in the treasury of the East India Company, which was removed the following day.
This rare series of four views shows the factories as they appeared in 1822 before the fire and at two stages during the blaze and in ruins. In the first two scenes the factories lie undisturbed. In the second the tranquility of a calm and moonlit evening is disturbed by a reddening cloud above the "Old English" factory; a fire-fighting gang moves into action in front of the Spanish factory. Later in the night the fire had spread along the length of the factory sight and the foreshore is crowded with figures. The final depiction shows a scene of desolation. According to Robert Morrison, who witnessed the scene on the morning of Sunday 3rd November, it "exhibited nothing but the ruins of all the foreign factories, with the exception of the American Consul's (Mr Willcocks), Mr Berry's and a part of Mr Magniac's: the English warehouse was entirely consumed ...!"

1401. THE HELMAN SERIES OF THE CONQUESTS OF THE EMPEROR QIANLONG
AFTER ISIDORE STANISLAS HELMAN: A series of 24 depictions of the conquests of the Emperor Qianlong, copperplate engravings, published Paris 1786, 47cm x 43cm (unframed in a box folio)
The original and larger version of this famous work was commissioned by the Emperor Qianlong in the 1760's. He enlisted the aid of a team of missionary artists then resident in Peking, including the famous Giuseppe Castiglione. When this edition was completed the Emperor insisted that the original plates be returned to the Imperial Palace.
To satisfy the curiosity of the French public about this extraordinary work it was decided to issue a smaller version in 1785. Helman, the foremost French engraver of the period, was chosen to reproduce the engravings on a reduced scale. This work was finished in 1786 and published in that year.£5000-10000

On 20th June 1858 there was first an unsuccessful attempt by a flotilla of British gunboats under Admiral Sir James Hope to force the entrance of the Pi Ho River. This was guarded by the Taku Fort. This painting depicts the SS Kestrel sunk and the other vessels in difficulty.
