In the Catalogue Raisonne Reine de Bertier de Sauvigny admires the rendering of the architecture and the fine quality of the background. She also suggests the figures may be by another hand. An enlightening correspondence between Arthur Tooth & Sons and Tim Lewis exists in the family archive dating from the period shortly after the acquisition of the painting, circa 1976/1977.
