See illustrations

Provenance: Probably Joseph Barnard (1745-1825), the founder of the Bedford Bank, who married Mary Talbot in 1774.
Thence by descent at Kempston Hoo, Bedfordshire and latterly in Dorset.

Joseph Barnard, a Freeman of the City of London, came to Bedford circa 1776 and started a coal business at the wharf on the north side of Bedford Bridge. Joseph was encouraged to open the Bedford Bank and through his integrity and personal qualities he won the confidence and friendship of men such as the Duke of Bedford and Mr Samuel Whitbread. Indeed, they stood by him in 1809 when there was an attempted run on Barnard's Bank, during a financial storm which engulfed some of the private banks.

The Barnard Family believe this secretaire bookcase originally formed part of the furnishings of the Bedford Bank. This assertion is supported by the overall form and design of the piece. The cornice, incorporating a finely carved oval paterae on a fluted ground, may be compared to a set of chairs supplied by Thomas Chippendale to Goldsborough Hall, Yorkshire. Stylistically, the bookcase may also be compared to the oeuvre of Ince and Mayhew.
