In 1899 Isaac Rice founded the Electric Boat Company and ordered to build to completion, John Phillip Holland's Submersible Designs which were developed at the Lewis Nixon's Crescent Shipyard located in Elizabeth, New Jersey, USA. It is possible that the engraved submarine on this tea set was one of the first submarines to be purchased and commissioned into the US Naval service on 11th April 1900.
