ATTRIBUTED TO SIDNEY BARNSLEY: AN OAK COTSWOLD SCHOOL DRESSER, the open plate rack with a central curved chamfered upright dividing three shelves with wavy fronts and a lattice work back, the bowfronted base with exposed dovetails to the corners and chip carved bowfront with four frieze drawers and four panelled cupboard doors, on triple block-fronted feet with a curving crossrail, 68.5" high, 54" wide. Provenance: Private Collection, Cornwall. It is believed that this dresser entered the vendor's family in the 1920's

This dresser shows many of the typical features of Sidney Barnsley's works such as chamfered edges, exposed dovetails and through tenons as well as panel doors and block-fronted feet. The sideboard bears many features in common with the Sidney Barnsley dresser in the Cheltenham Museum and Art Gallery and with the sideboard that Barnsley made for W.G. Simmonds which is illustrated in "Handmade Woodwork of the 20th Century" by A.E. Bradshaw, page 17

The crocodile motif is a reference to Nelson's victory at the battle of the Nile in 1797. "Patriotic" furniture laden with references to military victories and the Empire typifies the Regency period and reached its' apotheosis in the Anglesey desk attributed to Marsh and Tatham.

NEWTON HOUSE: A VICTORIAN PAINTED DOLL'S HOUSE designed as a neo-classical town house, the pediment painted with the initials "SW BH" over the date "1912", the interior with numerous furnishings, on a plinth base, 45.5" wide x 67.25" high. See illustration

Provenance: Newton House, Newton Surmaville, Somerset

According to a handwritten note Sarah Fry married Robert Barclay in 1857 and had the doll's house made for her daughter in the 1860's. She died in 1911 when Hilda Bales Harbin bought the doll's house for her daughter and it is her initials that adorn the pediment. A significant proportion of the furniture appears to be original, whilst some has been added later.
