A LATE GEORGE II MAHOGANY POLE SCREEN in the manner of Thomas Chippendale, with a rectangular gros and petit-point banner worked with a parrot amidst summer foliage, on a spirally-fluted baluster shaft carved with bellflowers and beading, with a lower collar of stiff acanthus leaves, on three scrolling legs carved with rocaille-work and acanthus and ending in knurled toes, the pole with a finial carved with acanthus, 55.5" high. The banner 29.25" x 22.75". See illustration

Provenance: The Jervoise Family, Herriard Park, Hampshire and thence by descent.

This exceptionally fine pole screen relates to the published designs of Thomas Chippendale. Examples supplied by him to Dumfries House similarly have banners covered on the reverse with Chinese painted wallpaper. The finial on the present example bears a striking resemblance to those found on the Dumfries screens.

A PAIR OF LATE GEORGE II MAHOGANY CANDLESTANDS, each with a detachable octagonal top with a pierced fretwork gallery on a fluted and baluster shaft and a tripod base, 48.75" high x 10.25" dia. See illustration

Provenance: The Jervoise Family at Herriard Park and thence by descent.

The simple fluted column on these understated candlestands may be compared to a pair supplied by Thomas Chippendale to Paxton in 1774 (cf. Christopher Gilbert: The Life and Works of Thomas Chippendale, page 212, plate 385). The pierced "lattice-work" galleries, however, are more redolent of those found on a pair of candlestands with more elaborate bases supplied to Blair Castle in 1758.
Estimate: 3000-5000
