In 1899 Isaac Rice founded the Electric Boat Company and ordered to build to completion, John Phillip Holland's Submersible Designs which were developed at the Lewis Nixon's Crescent Shipyard located in Elizabeth, New Jersey, USA. It is possible that the engraved submarine on this tea set was one of the first submarines to be purchased and commissioned into the US Naval service on 11th April 1900.

Biography of George Spencer-Watson (8th March 1869-11th April 1934). George Spencer-Watson was an English portrait artist of the Late Romantics School and sometimes worked in the style of the Italian Renaissance. He was elected a member of the Royal Academy in 1932. He was born in London and studied at the Royal Academy from 1889, exhibited there from 1891 and also at the Paris Salon. He married Hilda and they had a daughter Mary Spencer-Watson (1913-2006) who was a sculptor.

This dresser shows many of the typical features of Sidney Barnsley's works such as chamfered edges, exposed dovetails and through tenons as well as panel doors and block-fronted feet. The sideboard bears many features in common with the Sidney Barnsley dresser in the Cheltenham Museum and Art Gallery and with the sideboard that Barnsley made for W.G. Simmonds which is illustrated in "Handmade Woodwork of the 20th Century" by A.E. Bradshaw, page 17

According to a handwritten note Sarah Fry married Robert Barclay in 1857 and had the doll's house made for her daughter in the 1860's. John Vanderbank (died 1727) was the leading tapestry weaver of his day in England and official Chief Arras Worker of the Great Wardrobe from 1689-1727. He was responsible for the best of the so-called Soho tapestries. His chinoiserie scenes dateable to around 1700, with groups of exotically dressed Orientals, as much Indian as Chinese are generally regarded as his finest works. His most important commission was for a set of chinoiserie tapestries for Elihu Yale, which were probably based on miniatures bought back from India. These are now at Yale University.

This exceptionally fine pole screen relates to the published designs of Thomas Chippendale. Examples supplied by him to Dumfries House similarly have banners covered on the reverse with Chinese painted wallpaper. The finial on the present example bears a striking resemblance to those found on the Dumfries screens.

The simple fluted column on these understated candlestands may be compared to a pair supplied by Thomas Chippendale to Paxton in 1774 (cf. Christopher Gilbert: The Life and Works of Thomas Chippendale, page 212, plate 385). The pierced "lattice-work" galleries, however, are more redolent of those found on a pair of candlestands with more elaborate bases supplied to Blair Castle in 1758.
