Books & Prints Sale to include "The Vessey Collection"
11am on 17th January 2008
Advocates for Children
The library of the late Dr David Vessey is being auctioned to raise funds for the establishment of the
charity ‘Advocates for Children’
The Charity will provide a range of advice, support and representation for children with physical and
learning disabilities aged between four and sixteen. It will pioneer a new and uniquely holistic
approach to each child’s case.
Advocates will work with parents seeking statements or appropriate special educational needs
provision for their children, or those facing a Special Educational Needs Tribunal.
The proceeds of this auction will enable the charity to begin its work, to continue to fundraise for the
benefit of many more children, and to flourish in the future.
Dr David Vessey
A child prodigy, David Vessey started collecting
books at the age of eight. It remained a life-long
passion.
He studied at St Catherine’s College, Cambridge and
went on to become a world-renowned classical
scholar, and a published poet on both sides of the
Atlantic. He was elected a Fellow of the Society of
Antiquaries in recognition of his contribution to
scholarship.
It was David Vessey’s wish that, after his death, his
book collection be auctioned to enable Mrs Gloria
Vessey, a barrister, to expand her own free
representation work for children with disabilities.
The Charity’s uniquely holistic approach to each child
was inspired by the lifetime’s work of David Vessey’s
late father-in-law, Peter Talbot, whose work with
children Dr Vessey also wished to pay tribute to.
This unique auction, and the exceptional children it
will help, is a truly fitting memorial to a very
remarkable man.
