During the Great War, Philben served with Seaforth Highlanders. He was awarded the Military Medal, announced in the London Gazette on 18th October 1917. He was serving with the 1/4 (Ross Highland) Bn at the time. The announcement date indicates the award was for Passchendaele. Philben survived the war and worked as a watchmaker. He passed away in Manchester in 1965.
