AN IMPORTANT REGENCY COADE STONE TORCHERE by Coade & Sealy, Lambeth, 1810, the octagonal foliate capital carved and moulded in relief with monkeys amidst foliage, the panelled and faceted shaft with lancet-shaped arches and the heads of kings, on a square panelled plinth decorated with quatrefoils centred by vacant shields and inscribed and dated "1810", 81" high. Provenance: One from a set of ten torcheres designed by Thomas Hopper and supplied to George, Prince of Wales, for Carlton House. In the 1820's they were removed to Windsor Castle. One torchere from the set is in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, which was acquired from Christopher Gibbs Ltd in 1970. This lot is sold with two coloured engravings of the conservatory at Carlton House. In one the torcheres are depicted in situ in the piers between the arched Gothic windows. (see above)
