A FINE GEORGE III CHINESE-MARKET GOLD, ENAMEL, PEARL AND DIAMOND-SET POCKET WATCH by William Anthony, London, no. 2072, the white enamel convex dial with Roman numeral hour chapter, the seconds chapter with Arabic numerals at the quarters, with a seed pearl border; the back of the case set with a large central rose-cut diamond surrounded by sixteen further small diamonds, within seed pearl and gold scroll borders on a guilloche blue-enamel ground, enclosed by subsidiary enamelled borders of red and blue, within an outer border of seed pearls, the suspension loop also set with seed pearls; the ornate movement finely engraved with foliate scrolls, the convex movement cover signed 'Willm. Anthony, London, No. 2072' and engraved with a horse and arrows, the outer edge of the movement case and the concave inner surface of the back cover with gold hallmarks, the watch 2.5" (6.4cm) dia., 3.5" (9cm) high including the suspension loop. Provenance: Acquired by the vendor from a private collection in France. William Anthony (1765-1844) worked in Red Lion Street, St. John's Square, Clerkenwell, London, and specialised in watches for the Chinese market. For a very similar watch sold in these salerooms, see 'Treasures from the Summer Palace', Duke's, May 19th 2011, lot 86. Given the fact that the present lot was acquired in France, it is highly likely that it was taken from the Summer Palace by French troops, who along with the British were largely responsible for the lamentable sacking and looting of the Yuanmingyuan in 1860.
